1927 Shay locomotive

This two-truck (double-bogie) 3 ft (914 mm) gauge Shay was completed on 30 September 1927 by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Phoenix Utility Company in Waterville, North Carolina, as their No. 9. On 18 December 1929 it was purchased by the Fontana Mining Company in Swain County, North Carolina. After being sold to the North Carolina Exploration Company on 24 March 1931, it became the property of the Champion Fibre & Paper Company of Fire Creek, North Carolina, on 5 April 1944 (and joined its twin, No. 11). The Ely-Thomas Lumber Company in Jetsville, West Virginia, then bought it on 6 August 1947 to become their No. 6.  In 1955 it was bought by a narrow gauge historian who permanently leased it to the Pine Creek Railroad, now part of the New Jersey Museum of Transportation in Allaire State Park.  Website
