As well as Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz was one of the thriving hubs of Berlin - until 1945. The post-WW2 East-West zone border ran through it and in 1961 the Communists decided to build their wall to stop people escaping their workers paradise. What wasn't destroyed in WW2 bombing was cleared and turned into a wasteland. After reunification in 1990, it became Europe's biggest building site and is now a totally modern office building area without trams, although as a token to the past, a scaled down version of the traffic tower (in the top pic) was erected.
