The Tamar Bridge, which carries traffic between Cornwall and Devon in the area of Plymouth, was opened officially on 26 April 1962 and this postcard probably dates from not long after this. Measurements given at the time of opening included the total length at 2,108 feet (642.5 metres), a central span of 1,100 feet (335 metres), side spans 374 feet (114 metres) and the width of the carriageway was 33 feet (10 metres). When it opened it was the longest suspension bridge in the UK. In 2001 it became the world's first suspension bridge to be widened (from three to five lanes) using cantilevers.
