the pre-SNCF regions of France

As in the UK, different parts of France were operated by different railway companies, and had their own terminal stations in Paris with the exception of Midi which was in the south-western part of the country only.  The SNCF combined all these into a national railway company as from 1 January 1938, although the state initially held just 51% of the share capital, later increased to 100%.
