Bridgewater Canal, England, 1926
Despite later losing much of their tasks to the railways, canals continued to play an important transport role in Britain until well into the 20th century. Today they are almost entirely used for leisure. This painting by English artist Doug Kewley depicts the Bridgewater Canal at the top locks basin at Runcorn in 1926.
Opened on 17 July 1761, the Bridgewater Canal has a special place in history as the first canal in Britain to be built without following an existing watercourse and perhaps more importantly it was a model for those that followed it. Website
