road/rail bridge, southern Hawke's Bay, 1920s

A view of the combined road and rail bridge at Ngawapaurua which is a former flag station on the north Wairarapa Line, about 5 miles (8 km) south of the Woodville junction.  This is looking south. A track inspection tricycle can be seen half way along the bridge. Presumably the cabin was occupied by someone whose job was to stop road traffic upon the approach of a train.  Surprisingly, it took until 1965 for a parallel road-only bridge to be opened for State Highway 2.
