In French a cliché is a photo negative or printing plate, in English it also means a stale, worn out expression, and good editors will look to eliminate them.
We examined some in the book The New Gobbledygook from 2004; this book looks at more such as "at the end of the day", "with the best will in the world", "going foward", "my hands are tied" and "movers and shakers". Like our book, this contains an entertaining examination of the history and literal implications, and suggests better alternatives. It also has likewise entertaining graphics for some entries.
