more from the Congo, a century ago

Another of the Liebig meat extract cards, showing a canoe on a river, and a railway at Falahalla in the Congo.

The back of the card read, as translated:
"Colonies of the European Powers
"The Belgium state, relatively young, since it only dates from 1850, naturally could not take part in the colonial enterprises following the discovery of America. It is only since 1909 that Belgium has officially joined the colonial powers, following the annexation of the independent state of the Congo.  This beautiful country of central Africa covers an area of 2,252,780 square km.  The number of its inhabitants is not known exactly; estimates vary between 14 and 30 million.  The principal products of the Congo are rubber, ivory and precious wood."
