New Haven railroad Fairbanks Morse diesel

An advert from 1953.  According to the roster, locomotive 792 was a Fairbanks Morse DER-4, built to their CPA24-5 specification and delivered in January 1952. This was a Bo-(A1A) type with a 2,400 hp (1765 kW) power plant.

The "C-liners" were based on a common or consolidated design: the same body could have a variety of prime movers from 1600 to 2400 hp using a "modular" approach to the design of the Fairbanks Morse opposed cylinder engine which performed well for the US Navy as a submarine power plant in WW2 and as an engine in tug boats. The 2400 hp, 12 opposed cylinders, 24 pistons engine was prone to piston failure and difficult to maintain as the upper crankshaft had to be removed to service the cylinders and associated parts.

These locos, 2 delivered in April 1951 and 8 in January 1952, were numbered 790-799; they were retired from service between 1958 and 1961.
