A postcard postmarked 1972 but likely made 20 years earlier of one of the roll-on roll-off ferries called "
bacs" that was used to ferry people and vehicles between La Rochelle in France and the island of Ile de Ré. In 1988 they were replaced by a 2.9 km bridge from the mainland.
Unlike the normal ro-ro ferry where vehicles drive on and off the back/front, it's obvious that vehicles drove on and off the sides.
