One of the now pedestrian tunnels of the former railway |
The steep, twisting 32 km long metre-gauge (?) railway between Rimini in Italy and the tiny Republic of San Marino was opened in 1932 but lasted only 12 years - a lot of it was destroyed by WW2 fighting in the area in 1944. It climbed 541 metres in altitude and was operated by electric railcars supplied from overhead at 3,000 Volts DC.
Proposals have been made to reinstate the railway over the years but have never come to anything.
