steam at Khandalla station


No, not the one in Wellington, although it was named after this place.  It seems that its name saw the end H dropped between the 19th century and this scene dated 1908, and the second L has since been dropped too, whereas the one in Wellington is still spelt as it was.  It is actually at a reasonable altitude of 625 metres (2050 ft).  It seems the need for reversing has since been done away with by the construction of a tunnel.  More about this area of India on this webpage
