the main avenue of Detroit, 1942
Two marvellous photos of Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, in July 1942. The city had boomed in the previous few decades with automotive production, and there were even bigger boom times ahead. Some great period cars are visible and, of course, the streetcars are prominent. Today a significant number of buildings along here are abandoned. The first view is looking south along Woodward Avenue from the Maccabees Building at Warren Avenue, with downtown Detroit in the distance. The second view is looking north with the Fisher Building at the distant left, and the Wardell Hotel at the right. In the foreground, the building to the right (cut off) is now the home of the Detroit Institute of Arts. The building on the left is the Detroit Public Library. (via shorpy.com)
