Ancien is French for 'former' although the cognate English word 'ancient' is appropriate too. The locomotive designed by Isaac Newton in 1760 at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and George Stephenson's famous Rocket from 1829 - a bit more about the latter and its winning of the Rainhill trials here.
