Luxembourg funicular project

The Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has officially announced the project Gare ferroviaire Pont Rouge “Red Bridge Railway Station” which is part of a strategy for sustainable mobility (mobilité durable or MODU).
A new railway station will be built on the ligne du Nord (Northern Line) up and under the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte (Red Bridge) and the a funicular shuttle system will be implemented between the train station and the Boulevard Kennedy where a link will be make with the tram leading to the Kirchberg plateau and the City Centre.
The shuttle system will consist of two independent and parallel inclined elevators. The type of cabin for this project will be similar to those used on the Hungerburgbahn at Innsbruck. That means that the cabins will have articulated compartments which enable the floors to be always horizontal regardless of the slope.
The difference in level between the railway line and Kennedy Boulevard is 40 meters. The funicular shuttle project will not provide a direct link down the Pfaffenthal area located 15 meters below the station. For this, the project includes a stair and vertical lifts.
