Deutsche Reichsbahn E44 class


A total of 187 of this Bo-Bo type electric locomotive were built before, during and after WW2 and lasted in use in both east and west until the 1980s. It was the first German locomotive type of which more than 100 were built and the first electric to use individual traction motors rather than external rod drive. In the West the class was renumbered as class 144 and in the East as class 244. Number 044 is one of 2 still operational and belongs to the Fahrzeugsinstandhaltungswerk (vehicle maintenance facility) of Dessau (Deutsche Bahn). Here it is seen hauling a special train from Leipzig through Merseburg to Meiningen to a steam spectacular there. Number 046 is on display at Leipzig main station (see earlier post)
