The Gedächtniskirche or memorial church built between 1891 and 1895 by Kaiser Wilhelm II in the centre of the Breitscheidplatz as a symbol of Prussian unity and a mark of honor for his grandfather, Kaiser Wilhem I, became a symbol of West Berlin after its destruction in WW2 and subsequent conversion into a memorial to the war with the damaged spire retained (known as the hohlen Zahn or hollow tooth) and a new church built. The rebuilding of Tauentzienstrasse since WW2 and the trees make an equivalent view today to the view taken in 1925 difficult.
