the steamer 'Elginshire' beached south of Timaru, 1892
The S.S. Elginshire, a 4,579 grt refrigerated cargo ship, owned by the Scottish Shire Line, due in Timaru from Oamaru on 9 March 1892, instead stranded opposite the Normanby bridge and railway station, 8 km (5 miles) south of Timaru. Rescue efforts were abandoned and the wreck stayed there. This photo would have been taken some years later.

I take it the shipping company had their resource consent to remove the wreck declined? One can only imagine the environmental devastation ...
The fuel would have been coal, not nearly as bad as oil. There were lots of shipwrecks around the coast that were just left as they were.
