heritage trains to return to scenic Illawarra, NSW Australia, railway after 4 decades

from ABC Illawarra Facebook:

Work has recommenced on the multi-million-dollar upgrade to a historic rail corridor stretching along the Southern Highlands, which will see heritage trains return to the track for the first time in four decades.

Rock stabilisation efforts began on Monday, marking the start of an 11-week project to level 18 kilometres of train line from Buxton through to Colo Vale, near Mittagong.

Crews will use a combination of scaling and rock-bolting to ensure the long-term stability of the seven rock cuttings along the Loop Line extension.

CEO of Transport Heritage NSW, Andrew Moritz said a strong increase in visitors to the NSW Rail Museum in nearby Thirlmere inspired the upgrade.

"We've seen really strong growth in people visiting the museum and riding our trains so it was a natural opportunity for us to consider extending south, it's a very picturesque area."
