1901 Duryea Pheaton

The Duryea Motor Wagon Company of Springfield, Massachusetts, is considered the first American car manufacturer when it produced a gasoline powered car in 1893.  Charles Duryea was inspired by an engine he saw at the Ohio State Fair and completed a car with his brother Frank which had a single cylinder, 4 hp engine.

The exhibit above in the Southward Museum near Waikanae has a joy stick control, twist throttle and up and down gears.  Move the joy stick right and the car steers left; and vice versa!
