The original tramway system in Grenoble existed between 1894 and 1952 which connected Grenoble to neighboring villages.
Following the example of the city of Nantes, in 1971 it was decided to investigate recreating a tramway system and the first new line, Ligne A, in standard gauge, was opened in 1987. Three further lines followed: Ligne B in 1990, Ligne C in May 2006 and line D in October 2007, taking the present Grenoble tramway network to 35 km. There is another line, Ligne E, currently being constructed. The system uses Alstom-built cars.
