rail bridge over the Hollands Diep, 1870s


The first Moerdijk Bridge was opened on 1 January 1872, a single-truss bridge consisting of fourteen arched spans spaced every hundred meters At the opening, the Moerdijk Bridge was the longest bridge not only in Holland but in Europe. To allow vessels on the water to pass, on the Brabant side it was opened by means of a swing. In 2006 a new high speed train bridge was opened.
