This establishment had its beginnings in 1815 when William Skinner established a shipbuilding yard in Baltimore. The firm became William Skinner & Sons and under that name the business was continued until 1899, when it was incorporated as The William Skinner & Sons Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company of Baltimore City. Greatly enlarged and modernized it became the Upper Plant of The Baltimore Dry Docks and Ship Building Company.
