electric trams, Invercargill, 100 years ago


In fact the opening day of electric trams there on 26 March 1912.  Forty years later, 10 September 1952, came the closing day.  A 1 minute 46 second clip "tramsient pleasures" showing the trams operating and then the tracks being ripped out of the street is on this Southland Times webpage

No doubt people wish now that the trams had been kept as part of the heritage visitor appeal of the place.  Of course, we still have exactly the same problem of politician fools like Steven Joyce wanting to get rid of scenic railway lines (see earlier posts).
