the Paris RER

A 1970s postcard of an electric multiple unit of the Parisian Réseau Express Régional or RER, the suburban railway network around Paris and the Ile de France. It now consists of five lines, named A-E which contain 246 stations, 33 of which are within the city of Paris and runs over 587 km (365 miles) of track, including 76.5 km (47.5 miles) underground. Each line passes through the city almost exclusively underground and on dedicated tracks.

The RER is operated partly by RATP, the transport authority that operates the Paris Métro and buses, and partly by the SNCF. In spite of this, the system uses a single fare structure and no transfer is needed between parts run by the two operators. As well as the RER, the SNCF operates Transilien trains across the Ile de France.
