a Waffen-SS soldier inspects the identity tags of a fallen soldier, WW2 |
The line up of ones is significant in history as on the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th month of 1918, the "Great War; the war to end all wars" in which about 35 million people died, came to an end. Of course, a bit over 20 years later WW2 was underway which saw even more carnage, over 60 million dead, across a much wider territory in different parts of the world, although some countries involved in both wars such as the UK, France, NZ and Australia had significantly fewer casualties.
It is all summed up very well in the 1969 song War by Edwin Starr:
"War - what is it good for?
Absolutely nothing.
It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker,
friend only to the undertaker."
