the real Chitty Chitty Bang Bang


Most people have heard of the novel Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Flemming (creator of James Bond) published almost 50 years ago, written for his son, Caspar, and later turned into a movie. The illustration from the book 100 Years of Motoring (see above) shows the real car. "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" was actually a WW1 phrase rather than a song. Chits were the things you got to get out of the line and back to the villages behind the line - villages which had cathouses - hence Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang...
