Los Angeles - greener than you think

It is known as the city where not only does everyone have a car, but everyone needs a car to go anywhere.  However, the Los Angeles Metro map shows you can get around a fair bit of the city by bus and train.  And the buses don't consume diesel: it is one of the largest fleets of natural gas buses in North America; diesel buses were eliminated entirely by the end of 2008.

Studies have refuted the common perception that Los Angeles is a car-centric culture: The Brookings Institution ranked LA at the top of its list of 100 metro areas offering public transport to its carless residents. According to the Metro blog, ridership is up from last year, with the Gold Line doubling its average weekday ridership and the Red/Purple Line subway and the Blue Line also setting monthly records.

"Carmageddon" - the closure of a section of I-405 starting over the weekend of Friday 15 July 2011 -  came and went. Much of the credit for the quiet and uneventful closure was due to thousands of Angelenos doing what they do every day: using the Metro Rail to get around the city.
