the former Tramway du Puy-de-Dome, France

Postcards of the metre gauge steam railway using a rack and pinion system to climb the ancient volcano of Puy-de-Dome not far from Clermont Ferrand. The line was constructed in 1906 from Place Lamartine in Clermont-Ferrand (altitude of 390 metres) to an artificially level summit station at 1,414 metres. The line was 14.7 km long and operated from 1907 to 1926, always at a loss. But a new rack and pinion electrically operated railway is being built right now and is expected to be complete in June next year, to be known as the "Panoramique des Dômes". More on this website
