efficient freight movers

The volume of freight moved by rail in the USA has doubled in the last 30 years, but the amount of diesel consumed by the locomotive fleet has remained about the same.  That fact alone evidences that North American locomotives have become much more efficient in that time.

This annual survey by Trains magazine looks at what is being built and how it is being used around North America.  Total locomotive production for 2011 is 772, most by General Electric and EMD, and most for customers in the USA and Canada, but some for other countries including the UK (see earlier post about the GE 'PowerHaul'), Transnet in South Africa, Rio Tinto in Australia, PTKA in Indonesia and Vale in Brazil.

The editor is clearly mindful that as well as details of technology, people want to see action photos of the locos in use, and quite a few pages are devoted to that, as in the sample above.  The publication has 104 colour pages including 10 of manufacturer advertising.
