Matangi line-up, Wellington station
These latest electric multiple units have become the standard face of commuter rail transport in Wellington. At present there are 48 two-car sets but in August 2012 the Greater Wellington Regional Council announced that the option of placing another order for a further 35 units was preferred over refurbishing the Ganz Mavag EM/ET units from the early 1980s, with a resulting uniform fleet of 83 units for the Wellington electrified network intended.
The concrete plant boxes were put there to act as extra big buffer stops in case of a runaway crash, although there has really ever only been one, details of which are in the book Danger Ahead: NZ railway accidents in the modern era. For more, see earlier posts.
