Renfe class 279 Bo-Bo type electric locomotive

An HO scale model made by Electrotren.

The class 279 or class 7900 according to the old RENFE numbering comprised16 units delivered in 1967 and 1968. Like the 289 class, it served to address the problem of the coexistence of 1,500 V DC lines and 3,000 V DC lines, since at that time electrification varied depending on the area. This series was a dual-voltage locomotive, sometimes referred to as a universal locomotive due to its ability to operate on any electrified RENFE line .

The 279 series had a single 2,750 kW engine, and double-reducer bogies which allowed it to operate with different characteristics depending on whether it was used for passenger or freight trains. The maximum speed offered was 130 km/h for passenger trrain and 80 km/h for freight.

All were withdrawn by mid 2009 and 3 are preserved.
