From the Old Australian Shops FB page
There’s so much to love about this photo, the old tin shed, the Myer walkway bridge, and the classic cars. It was taken by Fred Mitchell in the 60s.
In the shadow of Melbourne’s grand GPO once stood “The Old Tin Shed,” a sweltering, cramped telegraph office turned tool shop that lasted more than 40 years. Though many saw it as an eyesore and debated its ownership, it managed to outlast countless calls for demolition. That was until 1964, when Whelan the Wrecker finally brought it down, with pleasure.
In its place now stands a sleek glass postal centre, a far cry from the humble shed it replaced.
Also featured is the Myer pedestrian bridge, completed in 1963. Designed by Tomkins, Shaw & Evans, it spans Little Bourke Street, linking the Myer department store with what is now Emporium Melbourne. It was built to streamline shopper movement and remains a key part of the city’s retail landscape.
