The Red Arrows fly over during the opening ceremony. more |
When the British Empire ceased to be an appropriate term in the 1950s the Empire Games were renamed the Commonwealth Games. Despite the radically changed political scene since the end of WW2, the British Commonwealth still comprises an eclectic collection of countries and territories, listed
here. They range from India and Malaysia through several African countries to Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. Despite the absence of some major countries that make up the world games of the Olympics, there is always the the possibility of new world records being set.
This time the games are being held in Glasgow, Scotland, which on 18 September is holding a referendum on Independence from the UK, which adds a little extra interest when a general theme of the games is one of unity.
