Figures produced by the NZTA show that traffic fatalities in January were 19 compared with 17 in January last year. In December the Police stated that anyone exceeding the speed limit by more than 4 km/h until the end of January would get a ticket, half the usual tolerance. So did that make a difference? Obviously not, except, no doubt, to Government revenue.
As we have said before, a lot depends on whether or not a particular speed is safe or unsafe for the conditions, and there are plenty of situations where the legal limit can be too fast, just as there are situations where the legal limit is unnecessarily slow.
