double deck electric multiple units, Netherlands


A pic taken in Leeuwarden by Geoff Churchman of one of the double-deck EMUs delivered in three generations as from 1994 and known as Verlengd InterRegio Materieel or VIRM, operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

The Bombardier website states it received an order from NS Reizigers for 13 four-car and 33 six-car trainsets, plus 128 VIRM double-deck intermediate coaches to be used to expand the current fleet of 81 InterRegio Materieel cars.

A four-car set is 108.6 metres long, 3 metres wide, traction motor combined power output is 1,592 kW (2,135 hp) and it can travel at 160 km/h.  Seating capacity is 407.
