This building was commenced in 1938, opened in 1940. As can be seen, it was Art Deco styled. The building continued in use as the city's public library for 5 decades when the present building was opened and this was turned into an art gallery. The Morris and Austin respectively in the foreground were dominant British marques of the time. They also reflect the 1946-1947 style change. Another photo considered for, but not used in the book
