electric locomotives at Otira, 1986

Three of the second and final class of electric locomotives built for the 14 km Otira to Arthur's Pass section of the Midland Line, the Japanese built Ea (later EO) class, are seen in front of loaded coal wagons at Otira on their way south-east.  This era came to an end in 1997.  They were later used in the Wellington area for a while, before being scrapped quite recently. For more info and pictures, see the book Railway Electrification in Australia and New Zealand.
