the steam ship 'Wairarapa'
The Wairarapa, built by Denny in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1882 for the Union Steam Ship Company, was one of a small number of luxury steamers on the trans-Tasman route.
She became one of NZ's worst shipwrecks when en route from Sydney to Auckland, shortly after midnight on 24 October 1894 the ship was wrecked near Miners Head on the northern tip of Great Barrier Island after going off course. The total loss of life was around 140.
Steel screw steamer, 1,786 gross register tons, Length 285.2ft (87 metres), breadth 36.3ft (11 metres), depth 23.7ft (7.2 metres).
