Unlike prewar and wartime classes, the Class 23 were German passenger train locomotives developed in the 1950s for the West German Deutsche Bundesbahn. They were designed to replace the once ubiquitous Prussian P 8 engines that had been built between 1908 and 1924 and, in their day, were the most numerous post-war replacement class.
A total 105 units were built between 1950 and 1959 and the last, 23 105, was the last steam loco to be delivered to the DB. Of the 105, 8 are preserved.

The last of the 23 class, built by Arnold Jung, was the last new steam locomotive delivered in West Germany.
