A total of 170 of these Co-Co type heavy freight locomotives were built between 1972 and 1978 as a replacement for the ageing
Class 150, in order to cope with increased requirements, particularly a 120 km/h (75 mph) top speed. Output power is 6,288 kW or 8,425 hp (one hour rating) and 5,982 kW (continuous rating).
