trams in New Brighton, Christchurch, January 1948

With Boon-built 154 tram and ex-decker trailer 143. Self Help on the right, a forerunner of the supermarkets, was a grocery business started circa 1922 by Benjamin Sutherland, an ex-employee of New Zealand Railways. The stores existed at least until the early 1970s. (Ross McQueen pic.)

5 is the route number still used for the buses to New Brighton, though westbound the route now extends as far as Rolleston.
