Maritime author Emmanuel "Manny" Makarios died at 4 pm Wellington time today. He was the author of six maritime books, five of them published by us.
We first made his acquaintance in 1994 when he was working on the first volume of the Nets, Lines and Pots trilogy on commercial fishermen and their vessels when he was at the Wellington Maritime Museum, now replaced by the Wellington Museum.
From 2000 to 2008 he managed the Wellington Cable Car Museum and since then worked at the Beacon Hill signal station. He was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer in 2017.
He last book All at Sea: stories of New Zealand seafarers was published in December 2017.

RIP Emmanuel I know you can't read this but if it were possible to give you a message this is what I would like to say ''Thank you for all you did to enhance the lives of seafarers ,shore side staff and shipbuilders around the world with your fine photographs and books along with the Transport heritage of Wellington . Your kindness in helping me with allowing the use of your many fine photos as basis for artwork will not be forgotten You were a rare jewel for Wellington and will be sadly missed.

Very sad to hear of Manny's passing. We sailed together on cement ship dev 'Ligar Bay' back around 1975/76. That ship's name was even part of his e-mail address. We had touched base now and again over the intervening decades whenever I was on a ship passing through Wellington. We last caught up with each other in Feb 2017 when I gave him a copy of a larger cement ship's plans and he was considering completing the tank testing model for display, but unfortunately project was just too big. At that meeting he was as cheerful as ever, and it's hard to register that he has now passed. R.I.P. Manny.
