The Melbourne to Sydney 'Southern Aurora' train

This was the prestige overnight train between the state capitals of Victoria and NSW which lasted from 1962 to 1986 with stainless steel carriages. With declining passenger numbers in the 1980s, it was decided to combine the Spirit of Progress and Southern Aurora into one train -- named Sydney Melbourne Express with the abbreviations the SEX and the MEX depending on the direction. The Southern Aurora ran for the last time on 2 August 1986.
