Handley Page HP.81 Hermes meets a railway line, England, 1960


Only 29 of this aircraft were built and this one was written off in the mishap pictured on 9 October 1960 - Hermes IV G-ALDC of Falcon Airways overran the runway on landing at Southend Airport, ending up across the Shenfield to Southend railway line. All 76 people on board survived, although five were taken to hospital with injuries.
