4-wheel coal wagons in Lyttelton, mid 1980s
This wasn't long before these were replaced by hopper cars of much greater capacity and efficiency. Did NZR want to get maximum use out of the old wagons before scrapping them?
Also visible is the Lyttelton passenger station, unused since 1972. A light rail service for Christchurch using the Lyttelton to Christchurch existing heavy rail line for part of the routes was proposed even before the 2010-2011 earthquakes, and the new planing opportunities they caused make it an obvious thing to do.
