straphangers on the Roslyn cable tram, Dunedin


"Wouldn't Occupational Safety and Health ban this today?" you wonder. Probably, although you can still do it in San Francisco whose cable-cars in technical terms are the same as the Dunedin system which was given Steven Joyce style treatment in 1957.  See earlier posts.

This is Rattray St, what's special about this spot is the curving cable car track - Cable cars were invented in SF, Dunedin was the 2nd place to install them, the ability to turn a corner was an invention by Dunedin locals. It's also the site of Dunedin's only fatal cable car accident.
