Chicago and Northwestern J-4 class diagram

Seen on a wall of the Chicago Barnes & Noble - something you are unlikely to see in a NZ bookstore as most are run by women with an aversion to technology.

The Chicago & North Western Railroad bought 12 of this 2-8-4 or "Berkshire" type locomotive from the American Locomotive Company in 1927. They were designated as Class J-4 and carried road numbers 2801 through 2812. They were very similar to the Boston & Albany's "sports models" Class A-1c.
These locos had 63" (1600 mm) diametre driving wheels, 28" x 30" (711 x 840 mm) cylinders, a weight of 397,000 pounds (180 tonnes) and exerted a tractive effort of 67,200 pounds (299 kN) under 240 psi (16.5 bar) of boiler pressure. The J-4s were assigned to freight service and regularly pulled coal trains until they were retired in the early 1950s.
