rail ferry at Messina, Italy, 1958

From rail ferries in NZ to ferries in Europe: this ferry service connects Messina on Sicily with the mainland at Villa San Giovanni, which lies some km north of the large city of Reggio Calabria; the ferries carry the carriages of the mainline trains between Palermo and Naples.  Proposals for a bridge to replace the ferries like those in Denmark have been put forward for many years but nothing so far has begun.
