J class steam locomotive at Dunedin circa 1946


The 'bullet nose' streamlining of the 4-8-2 type J class was quite distinctive and attractive; however, it was removed in the late 1940s due to ease of maintenance requirements and its being a trap for dust and soot, which didn't make life pleasant for engine crew.  For more, see our books.
